HVAC Basics: Here's How It Works
Jul 14, 2023

We all rely on HVAC systems every day, but few people have an understanding of how these systems actually work. Having a better comprehension of this climate control technology can help you be better prepared for air conditioner repair issues down the road. Here are the basics to get you acquainted with your HVAC system.

What Is HVAC?

HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. These systems are used to heat the interior of a structure during the winter and to cool that structure during the summer. HVAC systems are also an important part of air purification in your home as well. This system basically regulates the movement of air through the house as well as regulating the temperature of the air in the house.

How Does It Work?

Most HVAC systems have three major parts: a heating unit, a cooling unit, and an air duct system. According to the EIA Residential Energy Consumption Survey, the average HVAC system uses 3,500 watts to run two or three times an hour. The air starts its journey through the system in the ventilation components. This is where fresh air is brought in from outdoors. It can also be taken from open windows, doors, or cracks. Pressure differentiation is used to force the air through the structure. Today's homes are tightly sealed for energy efficiency, so fans are used to move the air through the system.

When the air is to be cooled, it's forced over the evaporator coils in the system. These are filled with refrigerant and it cools the air. The air is then sent on to the air handler and a blower will then send it through the ducts and out the vents to cool the rooms of the house. To warm air, there's a similar cycle. If the HVAC system uses a heat pump, then the heat pump will draw cold air from outside. This air is moved over warmed heat coils. The air rises to the desired temp and is pumped through the house.

To keep your HVAC system working right all year long, be sure to stay on top of maintenance and repairs. If you're in need of heating and
